Strait Of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway separating the Persian Gulf from the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. It lies between Iran to the north and the United Arab Emirates and Oman to the south. At its narrowest point, the strait is approximately 33 km wide, making it one of the world's most strategically important maritime chokepoints. The waterway serves as the primary shipping route for oil and gas exports from Persian Gulf producers, including Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Iran. An estimated one-fifth to one-third of the world's seaborne oil passes through the strait, making it critical to global energy security. Disruptions or threats to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz can trigger volatility in international oil markets and affect commodity prices worldwide. The strait has been the site of geopolitical tensions, particularly involving Iran, which has periodically threatened to close or restrict passage in response to international sanctions or military pressure. Naval forces from multiple countries, including the United States, patrol the waters to ensure freedom of navigation. The strategic significance of the Strait of Hormuz extends beyond energy to encompass global trade, as disruptions would affect supply chains for minerals, metals and other commodities shipped from the region. Its role as a critical transit point has made it a focal point in discussions of energy diversification and supply-chain resilience.
