Industrialisation

Industrialisation is the process by which an economy transforms from primarily agricultural or resource-based production to one dominated by manufacturing and industrial activity. The process involves the development of factories, infrastructure and mechanised production systems that enable mass manufacturing of goods. Industrialisation typically drives urbanisation, as workers migrate from rural areas to industrial centres, and creates demand for skilled labour, capital investment and technological innovation. In developing economies, industrialisation is often pursued as a deliberate policy objective to diversify economic activity, create employment, increase export earnings and reduce dependence on commodity exports. Key enablers include access to energy, transport infrastructure, skills development, access to finance and supportive regulatory frameworks. Industrialisation strategies may emphasise import substitution, where domestic manufacturing replaces imported goods, or export-oriented manufacturing aimed at global markets. In the African context, industrialisation efforts frequently focus on value addition to raw materials, localisation of supply chains and beneficiation of mineral and agricultural resources. South Africa's industrialisation agenda has historically centred on sectors such as automotive manufacturing, chemicals, metals beneficiation and capital equipment production. Contemporary industrialisation increasingly incorporates digital technologies, automation and sustainability considerations, distinguishing it from earlier waves of industrial development in Europe and North America during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
