Green Hydrogen

Green hydrogen is hydrogen produced through the electrolysis of water using electricity generated from renewable energy sources such as wind, solar or hydropower. Unlike grey hydrogen, which is derived from natural gas through steam methane reforming and releases carbon dioxide, or blue hydrogen, which captures some of those emissions, green hydrogen produces no carbon emissions during its production process. The electrolysis process splits water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen, with the hydrogen then stored or transported for use as a clean energy carrier. Green hydrogen is seen as a critical enabler of decarbonisation in hard-to-abate sectors including heavy industry, long-haul transport, shipping, aviation and steelmaking, where direct electrification is challenging. It can also be converted into green ammonia for use as a fertiliser or shipping fuel, or blended into natural gas networks. Southern Africa, particularly South Africa's Northern Cape and parts of Namibia, has attracted significant investment interest owing to abundant solar and wind resources that can supply low-cost renewable electricity for electrolysis. Major projects under development include export-oriented facilities targeting markets in Europe and Asia, as well as domestic applications in mining, refining and power generation. The technology remains capital intensive, and commercial viability depends on continued reductions in electrolyser costs, renewable energy prices and the establishment of offtake agreements and transport infrastructure. Green hydrogen is a key pillar of many countries' net-zero strategies and is expected to play a growing role in global energy systems as production scales and costs decline.
