Graphite

Graphite is a naturally occurring form of crystalline carbon and a critical industrial mineral used across multiple sectors. It is one of the softest minerals, with a distinctive greasy feel and metallic lustre, and exhibits exceptional properties including high thermal and electrical conductivity, chemical inertness and lubricity. Graphite occurs in three main forms: flake graphite, amorphous graphite and vein or lump graphite, each suited to different applications. The mineral is essential in steelmaking as a refractory material and carbon additive, in lithium-ion battery anodes for electric vehicles and energy storage, and in traditional applications such as lubricants, brake linings and pencils. Demand for graphite has surged with the global transition to electric mobility, as battery-grade spherical graphite is a key component of anode material. China dominates global production and processing, though deposits are found in Mozambique, Madagascar, Brazil, Canada and other regions. Natural graphite competes with synthetic graphite produced from petroleum coke, particularly in high-purity applications. Prices vary widely depending on grade, purity and flake size, with battery-grade material commanding a premium. Environmental and supply-chain concerns have driven efforts to develop alternative sources and recycling technologies. The graphite market is closely watched by battery manufacturers, steelmakers and technology companies as a strategic material for the energy transition.
