Battery Storage

Battery storage is a technology that captures electrical energy and stores it in electrochemical cells for later use, enabling power to be dispatched when needed rather than only when generated. The technology plays a critical role in modern electricity systems by decoupling generation from consumption, smoothing intermittent renewable supply, and providing grid stability services. Battery storage systems range from small residential units of a few kilowatt-hours to utility-scale installations exceeding hundreds of megawatt-hours. Lithium-ion chemistries dominate the market owing to their energy density, efficiency and declining costs, though flow batteries, sodium-ion and other technologies are gaining traction for specific applications. Key applications include peak shaving, frequency regulation, backup power, renewable energy integration and participation in demand-response programmes. In South Africa and across sub-Saharan Africa, battery storage is increasingly deployed alongside solar photovoltaic systems to address grid unreliability, loadshedding and the intermittency of renewable generation. Residential and commercial installations allow users to store solar energy generated during the day for use during evening peaks or outages. At utility scale, battery storage supports the energy transition by firming variable wind and solar output, deferring transmission upgrades and enabling virtual power plant aggregation. The sector is attracting significant investment from development finance institutions, technology providers and energy service companies as costs fall and policy frameworks evolve. Battery storage is widely regarded as essential infrastructure for decarbonising electricity systems while maintaining reliability and resilience.
