Tungsten

Tungsten is a hard, dense metallic element with the highest melting point of all metals, widely used in industrial and military applications. The metal is primarily extracted from wolframite and scheelite ores and is valued for its exceptional strength, heat resistance and density. Tungsten's main industrial use is in the production of tungsten carbide, a compound used to manufacture cutting tools, drill bits, mining equipment and wear-resistant parts. The metal is also essential in the production of high-speed steel alloys, which retain hardness at elevated temperatures. Other significant applications include filaments for lighting, electrodes for welding, radiation shielding and components in aerospace and defence systems. China dominates global tungsten production, accounting for the majority of mine output and processing capacity, while other producers include Vietnam, Russia and Rwanda. Tungsten is classified as a critical mineral by many governments, including the United States and members of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, owing to its strategic importance and supply concentration risks. Demand for tungsten is driven by manufacturing, construction, mining and defence sectors, with prices sensitive to industrial activity and geopolitical factors. The metal's scarcity outside China and its role in advanced manufacturing have prompted efforts to diversify supply chains and develop new deposits in North America, Europe and Australia. Tungsten is traded primarily as concentrates, ferrotungsten and ammonium paratungstate, with pricing typically benchmarked in metric tonne units.
