Name of the Project
Hemerdon tungsten/tin mine.
Location
Devon, UK.
Project Owner/s
UK mining company Tungsten West.
Project Description
Hemerdon is a fully permitted openpit tungsten/tin mine and processing operation with premium aggregate as a coproduct. It hosts one of the world's largest tungsten resources outside China.
The project has a base case 11-year life-of-mine (LoM), four years of subsequent stockpile reclaim and an additional 12 years of ongoing premium aggregate sales.
Total proven and probable ore reserves are estimated at 70.7-million tonnes grading 0.15% tungsten trioxide (WO₃) and 0.03% tin, containing about 10.3-million metric tonne units of WO₃.
Total LoM production is estimated at 4.6-million metric tonne units of WO₃ and 6 442 t of tin. Steady-state production is estimated at 332 000 metric tonne units of WO₃ and 462 t of tin a year.
The Hemerdon Futures programme provides scope to extend the openpit to the north and south along the defined Joint Ore Reserves Committee-compliant resource, which remains open at depth and to the south. This could extend the total operating life, including stockpile reprocessing and premium aggregate sales, to 40 years or more.
Potential Job Creation
The operation is expected to support more than 350 direct jobs.
Net Present Value/Internal Rate of Return
The 2025 feasibility study estimates an after-tax net present value, at a 7.5% discount rate, of $190-million and an internal rate of return of 29%.
Capital Expenditure
The feasibility study estimates the preproduction capital and financing requirement at $93.3-million. More than $300-million was previously invested in the site by the former operator.
Planned Start/End Date
Ore processing started in September 2026. Full plant commissioning is targeted to start in the first quarter of 2027, with steady-state production targeted for the second half of 2027.
Latest Developments
Hemerdon entered production on September 15, 2026, with ore being processed through the plant. Tungsten West is progressively ramping up the operation towards steady-state production.
Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
