Silver

Silver is a precious metal and industrial commodity with the chemical symbol Ag, widely traded on global markets and used in jewellery, electronics, solar panels, medical applications and investment products. The metal ranks among the most electrically and thermally conductive elements, making it essential for modern technology including photovoltaic cells, electrical contacts and antimicrobial coatings. Silver is typically mined as a by-product of copper, lead and zinc operations, though primary silver mines also operate in major producing regions including Mexico, Peru, China and Australia. The metal trades on exchanges such as the London Bullion Market and Comex, with prices influenced by industrial demand, investment flows and its traditional role as a store of value. Silver's dual character as both a precious and industrial metal creates price dynamics distinct from gold, with industrial consumption accounting for more than half of annual demand. Mining companies often hold silver assets through dedicated operations or as credits within polymetallic deposits, and royalty structures have become common financing mechanisms in the sector. The metal's applications in green technologies, particularly solar energy, have reinforced its strategic importance in the transition to renewable power. Silver has been used as currency and in decorative arts for millennia, and continues to attract investors seeking portfolio diversification and inflation protection.
