Potash

Potash is a potassium-rich salt used primarily as a fertiliser in agriculture, essential for crop growth and soil health. The term refers to a group of minerals and chemicals containing potassium in water-soluble form, most commonly potassium chloride (KCl), potassium sulphate and potassium nitrate. Potash is mined from underground ore deposits or extracted from brine, with major producing regions including Canada, Russia, Belarus and Germany. It is one of three primary nutrients required for plant growth, alongside nitrogen and phosphorus, and is critical for improving crop yields and food security. Global demand is driven by agricultural expansion, population growth and the need to maintain soil fertility. The potash market is relatively concentrated, with a small number of large producers controlling significant output, including Nutrien, Mosaic, K+S and Belaruskali. Prices are influenced by agricultural commodity cycles, trade policies and geopolitical factors, particularly sanctions affecting Belarusian and Russian supply. Potash is increasingly classified as a critical mineral by several governments due to its strategic importance to food production. The industry faces challenges including high capital costs for new mines, long development timelines and environmental concerns related to tailings and water use. Major deposits are found in ancient evaporite basins, with Saskatchewan in Canada hosting the world's largest reserves.
