Gulf

The Gulf is a body of water in the Middle East, formally known as the Persian Gulf or Arabian Gulf, bordered by Iran to the north and east and the Arabian Peninsula to the south and west. It connects to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically vital waterway. The Gulf spans about 251 000 square kilometres and is relatively shallow, with an average depth of 50 metres. Eight countries have coastlines along the Gulf: Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Oman. The region holds about half of the world's proven oil reserves and a third of global natural gas reserves, making it central to international energy markets. Major oil export terminals and shipping lanes traverse the Gulf, with millions of barrels of crude oil passing through the Strait of Hormuz daily. The Gulf states are significant consumers and importers of industrial commodities, including copper and other base metals, to support infrastructure development and economic diversification programmes. Political tensions and maritime security incidents in the Gulf can disrupt global supply chains and commodity flows. The term "Gulf" in business and geopolitical contexts typically refers to the broader Gulf Cooperation Council region, encompassing the six Arab states of the Gulf: Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman.
