Vanadium

Vanadium is a hard, silvery-grey transition metal used primarily as an alloying agent in steel production and increasingly in energy storage applications. The element, with atomic number 23, enhances the strength, toughness and wear resistance of steel when added in small quantities, making it essential for high-strength low-alloy steels used in construction, automotive manufacturing and infrastructure projects. Approximately 85% of global vanadium production is consumed by the steel industry, where it is added to produce rebar, structural beams and pipeline steel. Vanadium redox flow batteries represent a growing application, offering large-scale energy storage solutions for renewable energy integration and grid stabilisation. The metal is typically produced as ferrovanadium, an iron-vanadium alloy, or as vanadium pentoxide, a chemical compound used in battery electrolytes and catalysts. Major vanadium-producing countries include China, Russia and South Africa, with significant deposits found in titaniferous magnetite ores and vanadium-bearing shales. South Africa's Bushveld Complex hosts one of the world's largest vanadium resources, primarily extracted as a by-product of magnetite mining. Vanadium is classified as a critical mineral by several governments, including the United States and Australia, owing to its strategic importance in steel production and energy storage technologies. The vanadium market is relatively small compared with base metals, with global production estimated at around 100 000 tonnes of vanadium content annually. Prices are sensitive to steel demand cycles and policy support for energy storage deployment. The element was first discovered in 1801 by Spanish mineralogist Andrés Manuel del Río and later confirmed and named by Swedish chemist Nils Gabriel Sefström in 1830.
