Tin

Tin is a silvery-white metallic element with the chemical symbol Sn, derived from its Latin name stannum, and atomic number 50. It is a soft, malleable metal that resists corrosion and is primarily extracted from the mineral cassiterite, a tin oxide ore. Tin has been used by humans for thousands of years, most notably in the production of bronze when alloyed with copper, and remains an important industrial metal in the modern economy. The metal's key applications include soldering for electronics, where tin-based alloys are essential for joining electrical components, and the production of tinplate for food and beverage packaging. Tin is also used in the manufacture of chemicals, glass coatings, and various alloys such as pewter and bearing metals. Major tin-producing countries include China, Indonesia, Myanmar, Peru and Bolivia, with historical production centres in Cornwall, United Kingdom, and Malaysia. Global tin consumption is driven primarily by the electronics sector, which accounts for roughly half of total demand, followed by tinplate and chemical applications. Tin is increasingly recognised as a critical mineral by several governments owing to its importance in electronics manufacturing and renewable energy technologies, combined with supply chain concentration risks. The metal is traded on the London Metal Exchange and other commodity markets, with prices influenced by electronics demand cycles, mine supply disruptions and stockpile movements. Tin mining has a long history, with Bronze Age civilisation dependent on tin supplies, and the metal continues to play a vital role in modern technology and manufacturing.
