Shanghai Futures Exchange

The Shanghai Futures Exchange is one of China's principal commodity futures and options exchanges, based in Shanghai. Established in 1999 through the merger of three regional exchanges, it operates under the supervision of the China Securities Regulatory Commission. The exchange provides a regulated marketplace for trading futures and options contracts in metals, energy products, and other commodities. Core products include copper, aluminium, zinc, lead, nickel, tin, gold, silver, steel rebar, wire rod, hot-rolled coil, fuel oil, and natural rubber. It plays a central role in price discovery and risk management for China's industrial and manufacturing sectors, which are among the world's largest consumers of raw materials. The exchange uses electronic trading systems and operates during daytime and night sessions to accommodate international participants. Daily trading volumes and open interest on the Shanghai Futures Exchange are closely watched as indicators of Chinese demand for key commodities. Its benchmark contracts, particularly for base metals and steel products, influence global pricing and are referenced by producers, consumers, and traders worldwide. The exchange has expanded its product range and international reach over the past two decades, reflecting China's growing integration into global commodity markets.
