Recycling

Recycling is the process of collecting, processing and remanufacturing waste materials into new products, reducing the need for virgin raw materials and minimising environmental impact. In the mining and metals sector, recycling plays a critical role in recovering valuable metals such as gold, platinum-group metals, copper, zinc and lithium from end-of-life products, industrial scrap and mining waste. The practice supports circular economy principles by extending the life cycle of materials and reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions associated with primary extraction. Recycling operations range from the reprocessing of mine tailings and slag to the recovery of metals from electronic waste, catalytic converters and batteries. Major mining companies and specialist processors invest in recycling infrastructure to secure secondary sources of supply and meet growing demand for sustainably sourced materials. The economic viability of recycling depends on metal prices, the grade of recoverable material and the efficiency of processing technologies. Regulatory frameworks and environmental standards increasingly encourage recycling as part of resource stewardship and waste management strategies. The sector has expanded significantly in recent decades, driven by resource scarcity, technological advances and rising awareness of the environmental costs of primary mining.
