Québec

Québec is a province in eastern Canada and the country's largest province by area. Its capital is Québec City, while Montreal is its largest city and economic centre. The province has a population of about 8.5-million people, the majority of whom are French-speaking, making it the only Canadian province with a predominantly francophone population. Québec's economy is diverse, with key sectors including aerospace, information technology, pharmaceuticals, mining, forestry and hydroelectric power generation. The province is rich in natural resources, particularly minerals such as gold, copper, zinc, iron ore and critical minerals, as well as vast freshwater reserves. Major mining regions include the Abitibi greenstone belt and the northern Labrador Trough. Québec operates under a parliamentary system within the Canadian federation, with its own National Assembly and distinct civil law system based on the Napoleonic Code. The province is a member of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie and maintains a unique cultural and linguistic identity within Canada. Québec's abundant hydroelectric resources, managed primarily by Hydro-Québec, make it one of the world's largest producers of renewable energy. The province was originally colonised by France in the early seventeenth century and became part of British North America following the Seven Years' War in 1763, later joining the Canadian Confederation in 1867.
