Lobito Corridor

The Lobito Corridor is a strategic transport and logistics route linking the Atlantic coast of Angola to the mineral-rich interior of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia. The corridor centres on the Port of Lobito, a deepwater facility on Angola's central coast, and extends inland via the Benguela railway line, which runs eastward through Angola and connects to the Congolese and Zambian rail networks. The infrastructure is designed to facilitate the export of copper, cobalt, rare earths and other critical minerals from central Africa's mining belt to global markets. The corridor has attracted significant international investment and diplomatic attention, particularly from the United States and European Union, as part of efforts to diversify supply chains for critical minerals away from dominant routes through southern African ports. Rehabilitation and expansion of the Benguela railway and associated infrastructure have been supported by multilateral development finance and private-sector partnerships. The corridor also serves as a conduit for imports of fuel, machinery and consumer goods into landlocked mining regions. Operationally, the route competes with longer southern routes through South Africa and Mozambique, offering shorter transit times for Congolese exports. The Lobito Corridor is seen as a key enabler of economic integration in the region and a geopolitical asset in the contest for influence over African mineral resources.
