Hydrogen

Hydrogen is a clean energy carrier and industrial feedstock that is gaining prominence in the global energy transition and decarbonisation efforts. As the lightest and most abundant element in the universe, hydrogen does not occur freely in nature but must be produced from other compounds, most commonly water or hydrocarbons. When used as a fuel, hydrogen produces only water vapour as a byproduct, making it attractive for reducing carbon emissions in hard-to-abate sectors such as heavy industry, long-haul transport and steel production. Hydrogen is classified by colour according to its production method: grey hydrogen is derived from natural gas with carbon emissions released; blue hydrogen uses the same process but captures and stores the carbon; and green hydrogen is produced by electrolysis of water using renewable electricity, offering a zero-emission pathway. The fuel can be used directly in fuel cells to generate electricity for vehicles and stationary power, or combusted in modified engines and turbines. It also serves as a critical input for ammonia production, refining and chemical manufacturing. Major economies in Europe, Asia and Africa are developing hydrogen strategies and infrastructure, with significant investment in production facilities, storage and distribution networks. Namibia, South Africa and other African nations are positioning themselves as potential exporters of green hydrogen, leveraging abundant solar and wind resources. Automotive manufacturers including Toyota and BMW are advancing hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle technology alongside battery-electric platforms. Despite its promise, hydrogen faces challenges including high production costs for green variants, energy losses in conversion processes, storage and transport complexities, and the need for extensive new infrastructure to support widespread adoption.
