Beneficiation is next PGMs frontier – services provider

KOBIE PRUIS Platinum group metals must be viewed as commodities that move through an integrated lifecycle in which refining, manufacturing, industrial use, recovery and recycling extend their value
The next frontier for the platinum group metals (PGMs) industry is beneficiation “in its broadest sense”, whereby advanced materials, catalyst technologies, precious metal chemicals, hydrogen applications and circular resource management all offer South Africa an opportunity to capture significantly greater value from its mineral endowment while developing new industrial capabilities and specialised skills, reports integrated mining services group Zizwe Group CEO Kobie Pruis.
This transition requires a shift from linear thinking to circular thinking, whereby precious metals should not be viewed as resources with a single life ending at their extraction, he posits, adding instead, that these commodities should move through an integrated lifecycle in which refining, manufacturing, industrial use, recovery and recycling continually extend their value.
“Every stage strengthens supply security, reduces waste and supports responsible stewardship of finite resources.
“This conviction has led to the establishment of Zizwe Precious Metals – the newest strategic company within the Zizwe Group,” says Pruis.
Zizwe Precious Metals was created to participate in the next evolution of South Africa’s precious metals industry.
“The company reflects a long-term commitment to extending value creation beyond mining and into the broader precious metals economy,” he adds.
Zizwe Precious Metals aims to pursue opportunities across the precious metals value chain, including beneficiation, strategic partnerships, technology-driven processing solutions, metal recovery, recycling and downstream industrial applications. As these opportunities develop, the company intends to work with mining companies, technology providers, research institutions and industrial partners to unlock innovation and sustainable growth.
Buoying PGMs Sector
Zizwe Group’s decision to establish Zizwe Precious Metals reflects the group’s belief that mining companies must contribute not only to extracting resources, but to enabling the entire precious metals ecosystem, notes Pruis.
By connecting mining excellence with beneficiation, innovation and circular value creation, he says South Africa can reinforce its position as the global leader in the PGM industry.
Pruis adds that the future of South Africa’s mining industry will not be defined solely by the minerals available to the country, but by South African miner’s ability to unlock their full value throughout every stage of their lifecycle. “That is the opportunity before us – and one we should embrace with confidence.”
While historical mining success has been measured by tonnes extracted and ounces produced, Pruis says in the decades ahead, success will increasingly be measured by the degree of value South African miners can create from every gramme of metal recovered.
South Africa is uniquely positioned to lead this transition, he enthuses, adding that for PGMs, the Bushveld Igneous Complex contains the world’s biggest known PGM resource. This means the region is able to supply metals that are fundamental to emissions control, hydrogen technologies, advanced manufacturing, electronics and healthcare.
“Our opportunity, however, extends far beyond mining these resources. It lies in building an integrated value chain that maximises value from extraction through beneficiation, manufacturing, recovery and recycling,” says Pruis.
After more than two decades supporting South African mining operations, he says Zizwe has seen first-hand that value creation starts long before concentrate reaches the smelter.
“Decisions made during mine planning, selective mining, materials handling, crushing and processing directly influence recovery, efficiency, sustainability and ultimately economic value,” concludes Pruis.
