Decarbonisation

Decarbonisation is the process of reducing carbon dioxide emissions associated with energy production, industrial processes and economic activity, with the ultimate goal of achieving net-zero emissions. The term encompasses a broad range of strategies and technologies aimed at transitioning away from fossil fuels towards cleaner energy sources, improving energy efficiency and capturing or offsetting residual emissions. Decarbonisation is central to global efforts to mitigate climate change and limit temperature rises in line with international agreements such as the Paris Agreement. Key sectors targeted for decarbonisation include electricity generation, transport, heavy industry, buildings and agriculture. Technologies and approaches include renewable energy deployment, electrification of transport and heating, hydrogen production and use, carbon capture and storage, and improvements in industrial processes. Governments, corporations and investors increasingly view decarbonisation as both an environmental imperative and an economic opportunity, driving policy frameworks, carbon pricing mechanisms and investment in low-carbon infrastructure. The pace and pathway of decarbonisation vary by region and sector, influenced by resource availability, technological maturity, policy support and economic considerations. In Africa, decarbonisation strategies must balance development priorities, energy access and the continent's relatively low historical emissions with the need to build climate-resilient, low-carbon economies. The transition presents challenges including stranded assets in fossil fuel industries, workforce retraining and the capital intensity of new infrastructure, but also opportunities for leapfrogging to clean technologies and creating green jobs. Decarbonisation is a recurring theme in business coverage as companies set emissions targets, governments introduce regulations and markets evolve to price carbon risk.
