Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting computer systems, networks, digital devices and data from unauthorised access, theft, damage or disruption. It encompasses a range of technologies, processes and controls designed to safeguard information assets against cyber threats such as hacking, malware, ransomware, phishing and denial-of-service attacks. The field spans multiple domains including network security, application security, information security, operational security and disaster recovery planning. Cybersecurity has become critical across all sectors of the economy as organisations increasingly rely on digital infrastructure for operations, communications and data storage. In the financial services sector, cybersecurity is particularly vital given the sensitivity of customer data, the value of financial transactions and regulatory requirements for data protection. Key challenges include the evolving sophistication of cyber threats, the shortage of skilled cybersecurity professionals and the need to balance security measures with user convenience and operational efficiency. Organisations typically employ layered defence strategies combining firewalls, encryption, access controls, monitoring systems and employee training. Regulatory frameworks in many jurisdictions now mandate minimum cybersecurity standards, incident reporting and consumer data protection. The cybersecurity industry has grown rapidly, encompassing specialised vendors, consultancies and managed security service providers. As digital transformation accelerates and threats multiply, cybersecurity investment has become a strategic priority for businesses, governments and institutions worldwide.
