Are South African businesses ready for the next wave of AI-powered attacks?

Cybersecurity Awareness Month is underway, and South African organisations face a hard truth: AI has made cyberattacks cheaper, faster, and more convincing. No defence can stop all of them. The organisations that overcome cyberattacks will be those built to absorb them, contain them quickly, and keep operating.
Attackers use AI to write flawless phishing emails, clone executives' voices, and run social engineering campaigns at a scale that was impossible a few years ago. Simultaneously, sprawling cloud and hybrid environments give attackers more places to hide and security teams more ground to watch. For many local businesses already stretched by skills shortages, the gap between how fast attackers move and how fast defenders can respond is widening.
"AI has changed the economics of cyberattacks. A convincing, personalised attack now costs a threat actor almost nothing to produce, and they can launch thousands of them before most organizations notice the first," says Subhalakshmi Ganapathy, chief IT security evangelist at ManageEngine. "Prevention still matters, but it can't be the whole strategy. Resilience means assuming something will get through and making sure you can see it, stop it from spreading, and recover before it becomes a business crisis."
That shift calls for a different set of priorities. Real-time visibility across on-premises, cloud, and remote environments allows teams to spot unusual behaviour early. AI-driven detection helps separate genuine threats from the noise, so small teams can focus on what matters. Automated responses neutralise breaches by containing compromised accounts and devices in minutes rather than hours. Tested incident response and recovery plans ensure that a business knows exactly what to do when an attack lands.
The same technology powering today's attacks can also power the defence. This Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the question for South African businesses isn't whether they can keep every attacker out: It's whether they can keep going when one gets in.
