Albemarle

Albemarle is a global specialty chemicals company and one of the world's largest producers of lithium, a critical mineral used in electric vehicle batteries and energy storage systems. The company is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States, and operates across multiple continents with significant production facilities in Chile, Australia and the US. Albemarle is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol ALB. The company's lithium business segment extracts and processes lithium from brine operations in Chile's Atacama Desert and hard-rock mining operations in Australia, supplying lithium hydroxide and lithium carbonate to battery manufacturers and automotive companies worldwide. Beyond lithium, Albemarle produces bromine-based flame retardants and catalysts for refining applications, though lithium has become its dominant growth driver amid the global transition to electric vehicles. The company holds a significant market position in the lithium industry, competing with producers such as SQM and Livent, and maintains supply agreements with major automotive manufacturers including General Motors. Albemarle's operations in Chile's Atacama region represent some of the world's lowest-cost lithium production due to high brine concentrations and favourable evaporation conditions. The company was founded in 1887 and has evolved through numerous acquisitions and divestitures, with its lithium business expanding significantly following the 2015 acquisition of Rockwood Holdings.
