Albemarle Chile workers to vote on deal to avert lithium strike
Top lithium supplier Albemarle Corporation reached a preliminary wage agreement with union leaders in Chile on the final day of mediated talks before a strike was due to begin, the union said.
The accord still needs to be ratified by members in voting set to begin at 9:30 a.m. local time Wednesday, union boss Elias Torres said in an audio message.
The two sides agreed to extend mediation by two days to allow members to vote on the company’s new offer, which meets the union’s demands, he said. “The sun has finally come out,” he added.
Albemarle didn’t immediately reply to a request for comment made after business hours.
Averting a strike would remove the risk of a prolonged stoppage that could tighten supplies from a major source of the battery metal. In Chile, US-based Albemarle extracts lithium from brines in the giant Atacama salt flat and processes the material at its La Negra plant in the Antofagasta region.
The last strike at Albemarle’s Chilean operations was in 2021, when workers walked off the job for 35 days.
