Uranium

Uranium is a heavy, silvery-white metallic element and radioactive commodity that serves as the primary fuel for nuclear power generation worldwide. The element occurs naturally in low concentrations in rock, soil and water, and is extracted through conventional mining or in-situ leaching methods. Uranium's significance lies in its ability to sustain nuclear fission reactions, making it essential for electricity generation in nuclear reactors and for certain medical and industrial applications. Major uranium-producing countries include Kazakhstan, Canada and Australia, with Canada's Athabasca Basin in Saskatchewan hosting some of the world's highest-grade deposits. The uranium market is characterised by long-term supply contracts between producers and utilities, with prices historically volatile and sensitive to nuclear energy policy, reactor construction cycles and geopolitical factors. After mining, uranium ore is milled and processed into yellowcake (U₃O₈), which is then converted, enriched and fabricated into fuel assemblies for reactors. Global uranium demand is driven primarily by the nuclear power sector, which supplies roughly 10% of the world's electricity, though this share varies significantly by country. The industry faced a prolonged downturn following the 2011 Fukushima disaster, which led to reactor shutdowns and dampened demand, but has seen renewed interest as countries seek low-carbon baseload power to meet climate commitments. Environmental and safety considerations remain central to uranium mining and processing, with strict regulatory oversight governing radiation protection, tailings management and site rehabilitation.
