Tailings Storage

Tailings storage refers to the facilities and engineering systems used to contain the fine, waste material remaining after ore has been processed to extract valuable minerals such as gold, platinum or copper. Tailings are typically stored in engineered dams, storage facilities or dumps designed to manage the physical and chemical stability of the material over the long term. In gold mining regions such as South Africa's Witwatersrand basin, historic tailings deposits contain residual gold that can be economically retreated using modern processing technology, as practised by companies such as DRDGOLD. Tailings storage facilities pose environmental and safety risks, including dam failures, dust generation and acid mine drainage, making regulatory oversight and engineering standards critical. The industry has moved towards improved monitoring, dry-stacking methods and reprocessing of legacy tailings to reduce environmental liabilities while extracting further value. Tailings retreatment also supports resource efficiency by recovering metals from waste rather than mining new ore bodies. Regulators and industry bodies increasingly require detailed risk assessments and closure plans for tailings facilities. High-profile dam failures elsewhere in the world have heightened scrutiny of tailings management practices globally. In South Africa, tailings storage and retreatment form an important part of the gold sector's transition towards surface-based, lower-risk operations. The term covers both active waste-disposal facilities and legacy dumps being reprocessed for residual value.
