Pueblo Viejo life-of-mine extension project, Dominican Republic – update

Name of the Project
Pueblo Viejo life-of-mine extension project.
Location
Sanchez Ramirez province, Dominican Republic.
Project Owner/s
Multinational Barrick Mining Corporation, in a 60:40 joint venture with Newmont Corporation. Pueblo Viejo Dominicana Corporation operates the mine.
Project Description
The project comprises a processing plant expansion and the development of the Naranjo tailings storage facility (TSF) and associated infrastructure.
The expanded processing plant has a design capacity of about 14-million tonnes a year.
The February 2026 technical report provides for openpit mining until 2048, with processing of low-grade stockpiles and limestone rehandling continuing until 2049.
The Naranjo TSF is required to support this mine plan.
Barrick’s stated expansion target is about 800 000 oz/y of gold on a 100% basis over a 20-year mine life.
Potential Job Creation
Barrick expects the mine-life extension to sustain employment, local procurement and community infrastructure over an additional 20 years.
Net Present Value/Internal Rate of Return
Not stated.
Capital Expenditure
About $2.6-billion on a 100% basis. By June 30, 2026, total expansion project expenditure was $1.301-billion, including $36-million in the second quarter of 2026.
Planned Start/End Date
The project was approved to proceed in March 2020.
The construction and commissioning activities for the plant expansion were substantially completed by the end of the 2023 financial year.
The February 2026 technical report schedules tailings deposition at Naranjo from about mid-2030. Barrick’s subsequent second-quarter update targets receipt of the starter-dam permit in the first quarter of 2027.
Latest Developments
Barrick reported on October 5, 2026, that Pueblo Viejo had completed its 59th participatory environmental monitoring exercise. The quarterly programme, launched in 2012, involves communities, academics, authorities and other stakeholders in monitoring water and air quality and noise around the mine.
The Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) participates as an independent third party, with samples analysed at independent laboratories. Sampling covers treated-water discharge points, nearby rivers and other water bodies.
Monitoring results show compliance with applicable water-quality standards and improvement along the Margajita stream and at its entry into the Yuna river.
Development work centres on the Naranjo TSF and related infrastructure.
Barrick’s second-quarter 2026 update records receipt of permits for temporary water management structures, with construction under way. Haul roads, a diorite crusher and an effluent treatment plant are under construction, while reverse-osmosis plant engineering continues.
By June 30, 2026, more than 632 homes had been completed, more than 570 families had been resettled and 95% of resettlement packages had been accepted.
