Remote Monitoring

Remote monitoring is a technology approach that allows equipment, processes or sites to be observed and measured from a distance using sensors, telemetry and connected software platforms. It typically combines instrumentation, such as level, pressure, flow or temperature sensors, with wireless communication networks and cloud-based or on-premise dashboards that relay real-time data to operators. Applications span mining, water management, oil and gas, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals and chemicals, where it is used to track tank levels, tailings dams, pipelines and process equipment without requiring personnel on site. In mining, remote monitoring is increasingly applied to tailings facilities and remote operations to improve safety and reduce the need for physical inspections in hazardous or hard-to-reach areas. The technology supports predictive maintenance by flagging abnormal readings before equipment failure occurs, reducing downtime and unplanned costs. It also enables centralised control of geographically dispersed assets, allowing a single control room to oversee multiple sites. Adoption has accelerated alongside broader automation and digitalisation trends in industry, including growth in the Internet of Things and advanced sensor technologies such as radar level and guided wave radar sensors.
