Northern Territory

The Northern Territory is a federal territory of Australia located in the central and central-northern regions of the continent. Its capital is Darwin, a major port city on the Timor Sea. The territory covers about 1.42-million square kilometres, making it the third-largest Australian state or territory by area, yet it has a population of only around 250 000, concentrated mainly in Darwin and the regional centre of Alice Springs. The Northern Territory's economy is driven by mining, tourism, agriculture and defence. It is rich in mineral resources, including manganese, bauxite, zinc, lead, gold, uranium and rare earths, with significant operations on Groote Eylandt and in the McArthur River region. The territory also supports cattle grazing across vast pastoral leases and attracts visitors to Uluru, Kakadu National Park and other natural landmarks. The Northern Territory is governed under a system of self-government granted by the Commonwealth in 1978, with its own Legislative Assembly, though it remains a territory rather than a state. Its remote location, tropical monsoonal climate in the north and arid conditions in the south shape both its economic activity and its vulnerability to cyclones and extreme weather. The territory plays a strategic role in Australia's northern defence posture and trade links with Asia.
