Liquefied Natural Gas

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is natural gas that has been cooled to approximately minus 162 °C, transforming it from a gaseous state into a liquid for ease of storage and transportation. The liquefaction process reduces the volume of natural gas by about 600 times, making it economically viable to ship across oceans where pipeline infrastructure is impractical or unavailable. LNG is transported in specially designed cryogenic tankers and regasified at import terminals before being distributed through pipeline networks to end users. The global LNG industry has grown substantially since the 1960s, with major exporting nations including Qatar, Australia, the United States, Russia and Malaysia, while key importers include Japan, China, South Korea and European nations. LNG serves as a critical fuel for power generation, industrial processes and increasingly as a marine fuel, and is often positioned as a transitional energy source in the shift away from coal and oil. The industry requires significant capital investment in liquefaction plants, shipping fleets and regasification terminals, with projects typically structured around long-term supply contracts. LNG prices are influenced by regional gas market dynamics, oil price indexation in some contracts, shipping costs and geopolitical factors affecting supply security. Environmental considerations include methane emissions during production and transport, though LNG combustion produces lower carbon emissions than coal or oil. The sector faces growing scrutiny regarding its role in energy transition strategies, with debate over whether it represents a bridge fuel or a lock-in to fossil fuel infrastructure.
