Energy Transition

Energy transition is the structural shift in energy systems away from fossil fuels towards low-carbon and renewable energy sources, driven by climate change mitigation, technological advancement and policy imperatives. The transition encompasses changes in electricity generation, industrial processes, transport and heating, with renewable energy technologies such as solar, wind and hydropower replacing coal, oil and gas. It involves not only the deployment of clean energy infrastructure but also grid modernisation, energy storage solutions and demand-side management to accommodate variable renewable supply. The energy transition carries profound economic implications, reshaping labour markets, capital flows and trade patterns as countries and companies navigate decarbonisation pathways. In South Africa, the energy transition is closely linked to the restructuring of Eskom, the expansion of renewable energy procurement and the management of social and economic impacts in coal-dependent regions. Policy instruments supporting the transition include carbon pricing mechanisms, renewable energy targets, emissions trading systems and border adjustment measures designed to prevent carbon leakage. The pace and equity of the transition are central to international climate negotiations, with developing economies seeking financial and technical support to balance decarbonisation with development goals. Major industrial sectors including iron and steel, aluminium, cement and fertilisers face significant transformation as they adopt low-carbon production methods and explore hydrogen and other alternative energy carriers. The energy transition is both a technical challenge and a socioeconomic transformation, requiring coordination across government, industry and civil society to manage costs, preserve competitiveness and ensure a just transition for affected workers and communities.
