Glencore Canada VP awarded for sustainability achievements at Raglan mine
Canadian nickel, copper, zinc, cobalt and platinum group metals producer Glencore Canada has confirmed its VP Jean-François Verret received a Canada's Clean50 Award in the primary resources category as well as a Canada's Clean16 Award as category leader, for his efforts to advance responsible critical minerals development at the Raglan mine.
Verret led the Raglan mine's Sivumut expansion project and establishment of the Anuri underground mine, which has extended the mine's operations by more than 20 years.
"This recognition reflects an approach to mining in the Canadian Arctic that brings together long-term economic development, environmental performance and Indigenous economic participation," Glencore Canada states.
Notably, the Raglan mine's 6 MW wind and 3 MW battery system displaced 3.19-million litres of diesel and avoided about 8 900 t of greenhouse-gas emissions in 2025.
The mine's expansion initiative, Sivumut, started operating in February 2024 ahead of schedule and under budget, which was set at more than $500-million. The project, which included establishing the Anuri underground mine, has extended the Raglan mine's operations beyond 2040, which strengthens Canada's supply of nickel that is essential to the energy transition.
Sivumut and Raglan mine's broader operations have also generated significant economic opportunities in Nunavik.
In 2025, 26% of Raglan mine's $432-million in procurement spending, more than $112-million, was directed to Inuit businesses.
The mine employed 1 295 people, including 205 Inuit employees, and has since 1995 distributed more than $260-million to Nunavik Inuit communities through profit-sharing mechanisms, allocations and other agreement-related payments.
Verret says sustainability is not separate from how Glencore Canada operates its business - it means finding practical ways to reduce the company's footprint and improve performance, while creating long-term value with Inuit partners and responsibly producing minerals that Canada and the world need.
