Date: 1 - 4 October 2024

Location: Namibia

The Southern African Geophysical Association’s 18th Biennial Conference & Exhibition will provide opportunities to explore new partnerships and harness synergies as we meet under the theme of Collaborative Geoscience for Critical Supply.

As the impacts of the 4IR increase, improving operational efficiency, effectiveness and cost saving through digital transformation, key critical supply challenges remain. Materials needed to develop and power contemporary technologies, and sustainability, in areas such as water, are critical to not only to sustaining life, but also to enable most industrial processes.

Critical materials supply also directly impacts sustainable living. SAGA 2024 will showcase contemporary and innovative solutions to meet growing discovery and extraction demand as well as the necessary countermeasures. With globally increasing industrial activities, the challenge of achieving Net Zero necessarily accelerates, with geoscientific solutions such as underground carbon storage significantly mitigating the climate impact of our ever-growing demand.

These topics will form part of the body of knowledge presented in Windhoek, where delegates will have prime opportunities to bear witness to the mass of research being done across aspects of exploration, energy, mining and engineering geophysics. The event will provide deep engagement on topical issues and promote discussions over above- and below-ground activities globally, fostering geoscience collaboration for years to come.

Apart from the expected commercial, technical and social conferencing, this year the event will provide a platform for delegates to schedule direct business to business engagements, facilitating growth and establishment of critical networks.

An integral component of the event is the exhibition & trade show which boasts comprehensive representation from the global geophysical community. Delegates will have first-hand access to view cutting edge technology demonstrations, meet with original equipment manufacturers and agencies, expert consultancies and governments, hosted within our tailormade exhibition hall and breakaway technology sessions. Exhibits will include software and services providers, remote sensing, airborne, ground and sub-surface exploration technologies.

The breathtaking landscape of Namibia provides a feast for geophysicists as the earth’s crust is laid bare. From Windhoek, one can proceed in any direction and find oneself among a spectacular array of rock formations, dunes, canyons and mineral deposits. At this year’s event, we are offering you everything you could want from a geophysical foray into Namibia.

Locations will include the Damara Belt, Onganja Mine, and the Sperrgebiet, while field trips further afield to Zambia and Zimbabwe will be on offer to get the most from your trip to Southern Africa. There will also be exciting excursions for accompanying partners that will appeal to all the senses.

SAGA 2024 presents a particularly valuable opportunity this year as we link up with the Society of Economic Geologists, who will have their conference in Windhoek the week before ours. This offers SAGA the opportunity to join in on SEG workshops in addition to those presented by SAGA. Workshops will focus on various themes from seismic to electromagnetic and potential field methods, with software suppliers showcasing their latest functionalities.
