Witwatersrand Basin

The Witwatersrand Basin is a geological formation in South Africa that contains one of the world's largest known gold deposits. The basin extends across parts of Gauteng and the Free State provinces, centred on Johannesburg, and covers an area of approximately 350 km by 200 km. It is a sedimentary basin formed around 2.9-billion to 2.7-billion years ago, containing gold-bearing conglomerate reefs that have been the foundation of South Africa's gold mining industry since the late nineteenth century. The basin has produced more than 40% of all the gold ever mined globally, making it the single most productive gold field in history. Mining operations in the Witwatersrand Basin range from shallow surface workings to some of the deepest mines on Earth, with shafts extending more than 3 000 m below the surface. The basin's gold is typically found in thin conglomerate layers known as reefs, which are interspersed with quartzite and shale. Major mining companies, including Sibanye-Stillwater and Gold Fields, continue to operate in the basin, extracting gold from both established deep-level mines and newer projects targeting previously uneconomic deposits. The Witwatersrand Basin remains central to South Africa's mining economy and is closely monitored by industry bodies such as the Minerals Council South Africa. Exploration and development activity continues in areas such as the West Wits line, where companies are seeking to unlock remaining resources through advanced mining techniques.
