Walter Sisulu University

Walter Sisulu University is a public university in South Africa's Eastern Cape province. The institution was formed in 2005 through the merger of three former technikons and a university branch campus: Border Technikon, Eastern Cape Technikon, Transkei University and a campus of Rhodes University. It is named after Walter Sisulu, a prominent anti-apartheid activist and African National Congress leader. The university operates across multiple campuses in the Eastern Cape, including sites in Mthatha, East London, Butterworth and Queenstown. Walter Sisulu University offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in fields including health sciences, education, engineering, business and natural sciences. The institution serves a predominantly rural and historically disadvantaged student population, with a mandate to contribute to regional development and social transformation. It plays a significant role in training professionals for the Eastern Cape, one of South Africa's poorest provinces. The university has developed research capacity in areas relevant to the region's development challenges, including agriculture, public health and water security. Walter Sisulu University is one of 26 public universities in South Africa and falls under the oversight of the Department of Higher Education and Training.
