Thermal Power

Thermal power refers to electricity generation through the conversion of heat energy, typically produced by burning fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas or oil, into mechanical and then electrical energy via steam turbines. It remains the dominant source of baseload electricity in many economies, particularly in Asia and parts of Africa, because of its relative affordability and ability to supply continuous power regardless of weather conditions. Coal-fired thermal power plants are the most common type in countries with large domestic coal reserves, such as Vietnam, South Africa and India, where state utilities often rely on them to underpin energy security. Gas-fired thermal plants offer a comparatively cleaner alternative and can be ramped up and down more quickly to balance fluctuations from renewable sources. The sector faces mounting pressure from climate-change commitments, as thermal power generation is a major source of carbon dioxide and other emissions. Many governments and utilities are weighing the trade-off between reducing reliance on thermal power and maintaining reliable, affordable electricity supply, especially where renewable infrastructure and storage capacity remain limited. Investment in thermal power has slowed globally as financiers increasingly favour renewable and low-carbon projects, though new coal and gas plants continue to be built in developing economies to meet rising demand. Modernisation efforts in the sector include supercritical and ultra-supercritical plant technology, which improve efficiency and reduce emissions per unit of output. Thermal power's future is closely tied to debates over a just energy transition, balancing economic development, job preservation in coal-dependent regions and international decarbonisation targets.
