Shaft Sinking

Shaft sinking is a specialised mining engineering discipline involving the excavation of vertical or near-vertical tunnels, known as shafts, to access underground orebodies. The process provides essential access for personnel, equipment, ventilation, and the transport of ore and waste rock between the surface and underground workings. It typically involves drilling and blasting or mechanised excavation methods, combined with ground support systems such as concrete lining or shotcrete to stabilise the shaft walls. Shaft sinking is technically demanding and capital intensive, often requiring years of continuous work and significant safety planning owing to the risks of rock instability, water ingress and confined-space hazards. It plays a critical role in the mining value chain, particularly for deep-level operations found in gold, platinum and diamond mining regions of sub-Saharan Africa. Specialist contractors, engineers and equipment suppliers focus specifically on this niche, given the unique skills and machinery required compared with general mine construction. The sector is closely tied to broader mine development and capital-expenditure cycles, expanding when new mines are commissioned or existing operations extend to greater depths. Shaft sinking activity in Africa has historically been concentrated in South Africa's deep gold and platinum mines, some of the deepest in the world. Advances in mechanised sinking technology have gradually improved safety and productivity in the field. The discipline remains a key barometer of investment sentiment in the broader mining industry, given the long lead times and high costs associated with new shaft development.
