Sanctions

Sanctions are restrictive measures imposed by governments, blocs or international bodies to influence the political or economic behaviour of a targeted country, entity or individual. They typically include trade embargoes, asset freezes, travel bans and restrictions on financial transactions or access to capital markets. Sanctions can be imposed unilaterally, such as by the United States, or multilaterally through bodies such as the United Nations or European Union. In the mining and resources sector, sanctions can restrict a company's ability to raise finance, trade commodities such as nickel or cobalt, or operate in specific jurisdictions, including long-standing US measures against Cuba. Companies with exposure to sanctioned countries often face difficulty securing listings, loans or partnerships on major exchanges such as Toronto. Sanctions regimes are frequently tied to shifts in political leadership, as seen with changes in US policy under different administrations. Compliance requires companies to conduct due diligence on counterparties, ownership structures and beneficiaries to avoid breaching restrictions. Breaches can result in significant fines, reputational damage and exclusion from international financial systems. Sanctions are a recurring theme in coverage of cross-border mining and investment deals involving politically sensitive jurisdictions.
