Refining

Refining is the industrial process of converting crude oil and other raw petroleum products into usable fuels, lubricants and petrochemical feedstocks. The sector encompasses facilities that separate, crack, reform and blend hydrocarbon streams to produce petrol, diesel, jet fuel, liquefied petroleum gas, heating oil and a range of intermediate products for downstream chemical manufacturing. Refineries are capital-intensive installations that employ distillation, catalytic conversion and treatment units to upgrade crude oil according to market demand and product specifications. The industry plays a critical role in energy security by ensuring the availability of transport fuels and other essential petroleum products for national economies. Refining capacity, utilisation rates and product yields are key indicators of a country's ability to meet domestic fuel demand and reduce reliance on imported refined products. In Africa, refining infrastructure has historically lagged behind crude oil production, with many oil-producing nations exporting crude and importing refined fuels at higher cost. Recent investments in large-scale facilities such as the Dangote Refinery in Nigeria reflect efforts to close this gap and capture more value from domestic hydrocarbon resources. The sector faces ongoing challenges from volatile crude prices, environmental regulations, the energy transition and competition from more efficient global refineries. Refining margins, the difference between crude input costs and refined product revenues, determine the profitability and viability of individual plants. The industry is represented by bodies such as the African Refiners and Distributors Association, which promote regional cooperation and capacity development.
