Kalahari Copper Belt

The Kalahari Copper Belt is a major sediment-hosted copper mineralisation zone extending across north-eastern Namibia and north-western Botswana. The belt stretches for approximately 850 km in a north-east to south-west orientation, largely concealed beneath Kalahari sand cover. It hosts significant copper and silver deposits within sedimentary sequences of the Neoproterozoic Nguba and Kundelungu groups, which form part of the broader Katangan Supergroup. The Kalahari Copper Belt is considered one of Africa's most prospective copper provinces, with mineralisation styles similar to those found in the Central African Copperbelt of Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Exploration and mining activity in the belt has intensified in recent years, driven by rising global copper demand and advances in exploration techniques capable of detecting mineralisation beneath thick sand cover. The Namibian portion of the belt has attracted investment from junior explorers and major mining companies alike, with several advanced projects targeting sediment-hosted copper-silver mineralisation. The belt's economic significance lies in its potential to contribute to global copper supply at a time of increasing demand for the metal in renewable energy and electrification infrastructure. Geological studies suggest that the belt remains underexplored relative to its prospectivity, particularly in areas where Kalahari sand obscures surface geology.
