Gustavo Pimenta

Gustavo Pimenta is chief executive officer of Vale, the Brazilian multinational miner and one of the world's largest producers of iron-ore, copper and nickel, a role he assumed in October 2025. He also serves as chairperson of Vale Base Metals, Vale's energy-transition metals subsidiary, succeeding Mark Cutifani in that position from July 2025. Before becoming CEO, Pimenta held senior executive roles within Vale, including positions with financial oversight, and worked closely alongside its leadership during the company's recovery from the Brumadinho and other tailings dam disasters. Under his leadership, Vale has pursued an ambitious strategy to reclaim its position as the world's largest iron-ore producer, targeting annual output of 360-million tons and aiming to become the biggest metals producer globally by market capitalisation, overtaking rivals BHP Group and Rio Tinto Group. He has overseen record production years for iron-ore, copper and nickel, continued investment in tailings-free mining technology such as the reopened Capanema mine in Minas Gerais, and a major expansion programme known as 'Novo Carajas'. Pimenta has also engaged with Brazilian public policy, presenting proposals to presidential candidates aimed at boosting mining investment through faster permitting and geological mapping, and has commented publicly on global iron-ore market dynamics, including the effects of freight and energy costs on supply. He was named Best CEO in the 2026 Extel Latin America Executive Team awards, reflecting his profile among investors and analysts covering the mining sector.
