GreenCape

GreenCape is a non-profit organisation based in Cape Town that promotes the development of the green economy in South Africa. It focuses on sectors such as renewable energy, water, waste management, agriculture and sustainable mobility, working to unlock investment and market opportunities within the circular economy. GreenCape operates as a sector development agency, providing market intelligence, technical support and networking platforms to businesses, entrepreneurs and government bodies. It works closely with the City of Cape Town, the Western Cape provincial government and academic institutions such as the University of Cape Town to support innovation and green-sector growth. The organisation plays a role in incubating small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) operating in sustainability-related fields, including waste beneficiation projects such as pee-cycling initiatives. GreenCape also facilitates partnerships between local innovators and international collaborators, including bodies such as the Friedrich Naumann Foundation. It contributes to policy dialogue and research on water security, renewable energy uptake and sustainable agriculture in the Western Cape. GreenCape's activities extend to promoting South Africa's green economy credentials on the continent, with links to countries such as Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, Kenya and Tanzania. It was established to help diversify the regional economy and reduce reliance on carbon-intensive industries. GreenCape continues to be a key convenor of green economy events and stakeholder engagements in Cape Town.
