Defence Industry

The defence industry comprises companies and government entities engaged in the research, development, manufacture and maintenance of military equipment, weapons systems, vehicles, aircraft, ships and related technology. It spans state-owned arsenals, large multinational contractors and specialised suppliers of components, electronics and materials. The sector is heavily reliant on critical minerals such as rare earths, tungsten and lithium for advanced electronics, magnets, munitions and battery systems used in modern weaponry. Governments regard secure, domestic supply chains for these materials as a matter of national security, prompting policies to reduce dependence on imports, particularly from China. The industry is characterised by long procurement cycles, high barriers to entry, extensive regulation and close ties to national governments as primary customers. Demand is driven by geopolitical tensions, defence budgets and modernisation programmes among major powers including the United States, China and European states. Recycling of e-waste and battery materials has drawn attention as a potential domestic source of strategic minerals for defence applications. Trade policy, tariffs and export controls on critical minerals directly affect the industry's cost structures and supply security. The sector also intersects with civilian technology, as innovations in batteries, electronics and materials science often have dual-use applications. Its strategic importance means it frequently features in discussions of industrial policy, mineral security and great-power competition.
