Bearings

Bearings are mechanical components that constrain relative motion between moving parts to only the desired motion, reducing friction between them. They typically consist of an inner and outer race with rolling elements such as balls or rollers, or operate as plain sliding surfaces lubricated with oil or grease. Bearings are fundamental to virtually all machinery, from vehicles and industrial equipment to conveyors, pumps and rotating shafts, supporting loads while allowing smooth rotation or linear movement. The industry encompasses manufacturing, distribution and maintenance services, with demand closely tied to mining, manufacturing, automotive and general engineering activity. Quality and precision are critical, as bearing failure can cause costly downtime or equipment damage, making selection, lubrication and maintenance key areas of technical training. In sub-Saharan Africa, bearings form part of the broader mechanical engineering and industrial supply sector supporting mining and manufacturing operations. Local distributors and manufacturers work alongside global suppliers to service these markets. The sector also features in engineering education and skills development, including student projects such as Formula Student, where component selection for drivetrains and suspension systems relies on an understanding of bearing performance. Ongoing challenges include import dependence for specialised bearings, counterfeit products and the need for locally trained technical skills to support installation and maintenance across industries.
