Artisanal And Small-scale Mining

Artisanal and small-scale mining is a sector of mineral extraction characterised by low capital investment, labour-intensive methods and relatively simple technology. The sector encompasses operations ranging from individual prospectors and family units to small enterprises employing a few dozen workers. Activities typically involve the extraction of gold, diamonds, gemstones, coal and other minerals using basic tools and equipment, often with minimal mechanisation. Artisanal and small-scale mining is particularly significant in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and parts of Asia, where it provides livelihoods for an estimated 40-million to 45-million people directly and supports the livelihoods of a further 150-million to 200-million people indirectly through associated economic activities. The sector faces persistent challenges including limited access to finance and technology, insecure land tenure, health and safety risks, environmental degradation and, in some jurisdictions, informal or illegal operation outside formal regulatory frameworks. Governments and development agencies have increasingly sought to formalise artisanal and small-scale mining through licensing schemes, technical support programmes and market linkages, recognising its role in poverty alleviation and rural development. Environmental concerns centre on mercury use in gold processing, land disturbance and water pollution. The sector's contribution to national mineral output varies widely by country and commodity, with artisanal and small-scale gold mining accounting for a substantial share of global gold production. International bodies including the World Bank, the International Labour Organization and various non-governmental organisations work to improve working conditions, reduce environmental impacts and integrate the sector into formal economies.
