Al Cook

Al Cook is CEO of De Beers Group, the diamond mining and marketing company whose majority owner, Anglo American, has been seeking to sell its 85% stake since May 2024 as part of a broader restructuring. Under Cook's leadership, De Beers has pursued a cost-cutting and streamlining programme branded the Origins strategy, removing more than $100-million in yearly overhead costs, divesting noncore assets, pausing expansion projects such as Tuzo Phase 3 at Gahcho Kué in Canada and, in 2026, pausing production at its Venetia mine in South Africa for two years. He has overseen De Beers' sustainability framework, 'Building Forever', covering carbon reduction, job creation, conservation and diamond traceability, including growth of the Tracr blockchain provenance platform and its partial sale to the Gemological Institute of America. Cook has publicly discussed the sale process for De Beers, which has attracted interest from the governments of Botswana, Namibia and Angola alongside private consortia, and has described rough diamond supply as contracting while consumer demand shows signs of recovery, particularly in India. He also chairs discussions around De Beers' $70-million commitment to Botswana's Diamonds for Development Fund, which appointed former African Development Bank president Akinwumi Adesina as chairperson in 2026. Cook continues to report to Anglo American leadership, including incoming Anglo Teck CEO Duncan Wanblad, while the De Beers sale process is finalised. He has overseen several senior leadership changes at De Beers, including the appointment of an interim COO and a new chief economist, and the departure of long-serving executives.
