Women who keep industry moving

The industrial and lubricants sector may traditionally be viewed as a male-dominated environment, but women are increasingly proving that technical knowledge, operational excellence and leadership are defined by ability rather than gender.

At The Lube Guys, this reality is reflected in the career of Kim Roos, whose nearly ten-year journey with the company has been characterised by continuous growth, resilience and an unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional service. Kim’s decade-long journey demonstrates how women continue to make a lasting impact in South Africa's industrial sector.

As Administration and Internal Sales professional, Kim plays a pivotal role in the day-to-day running of the business, managing purchase orders, invoices and customer sales while ensuring the office operates efficiently.

“No two days are ever exactly the same,” says Kim. “I balance multiple priorities every day, but that's also what makes the role rewarding. I have learned that being organised, adaptable and willing to take responsibility makes all the difference.”

Growing through opportunity

Kim says her career was not something she consciously planned, but rather one that evolved naturally as new opportunities presented themselves. “I did not necessarily choose this career, but the more I have learned and developed in my role, the more motivated I have become to keep improving myself,” she explains.

“Looking back, I am most proud of how much I have grown over the past decade, both professionally and personally,” says Kim. That willingness to embrace continuous learning has enabled her to build confidence in an industry where women have historically been underrepresented. She believes meaningful progress has been made over the years, with more women being recognised for their skills, expertise and leadership potential.

“I have definitely seen more opportunities opening up for women,” says Kim. “The industry is becoming more welcoming, with women taking on greater responsibilities and proving themselves in roles that were traditionally seen as being for men.”

Learning from strong leadership

Kim attributes much of her professional development to the support and mentorship she has received throughout her career, particularly from The Lube Guys Director Nico Bezuidenhout. “He has taught me that hard work really does pay off and that there's always an opportunity to grow, no matter where you are in your career,” she says.

“Just as importantly, he understands that employees have lives outside of work and has always been supportive when family responsibilities or personal challenges arise,” adds Kim. Nico says Kim embodies the values that have helped The Lube Guys grow into a trusted supplier serving customers across South Africa and the broader African continent.

“Kim has been an integral part of The Lube Guys for almost ten years, and her dedication, professionalism and willingness to continuously learn have made her an invaluable member of our team,” says Nico. “She demonstrates that creating an environment where women are supported, respected and given opportunities to grow is not only the right thing to do but also strengthens the business. We are incredibly proud of everything she has achieved and look forward to seeing her continue to grow with the company.”

The Lube Guys has built its reputation on long-term relationships, responsive service and an agile approach to supporting customers across the mining and industrial sectors throughout Southern Africa and beyond. That same people-first philosophy extends to its employees, recognising that investing in people is fundamental to sustainable business success.

Inspiring the next generation

For Kim, Women’s Month is an opportunity to reflect not only on how far women have come, but also on the work that still lies ahead. “I would like to see a future where women do not feel they have to prove themselves simply because they are women,” says Kim.

“I want to see more equal opportunities, especially in traditionally male-dominated industries, and more women being given the chance to move into leadership roles. Ultimately, people should be judged by their work ethic, values and abilities.”

Kim’s advice to young women entering the workplace is equally straightforward. “Do not let the fact that an industry is male dominated intimidate you. Be confident in what you bring to the table, be willing to learn, work hard and do not be afraid to make mistakes. Every mistake is an opportunity to learn and grow, and you absolutely belong wherever your talents take you.”

This Women’s Month, The Lube Guys celebrates not only Kim’s individual journey, but also the growing number of women who are helping shape South Africa’s industrial future through dedication, expertise and perseverance. Their contributions continue to demonstrate that diverse workplaces are stronger, more innovative and better equipped to meet the demands of an evolving economy.
