Beyond Gantt: Choosing the Right Scheduling Approach for Mine Projects
(Virtual Showroom) When most people think of project scheduling, the image that comes to mind is a familiar one: the Gantt chart. It’s a great tool, especially for visualizing dependencies and deadlines, but in the fast-paced, operationally constrained world of mining projects, it’s rarely enough on its own.
At Treo Group, we’ve learned that successful project scheduling in a live mine environment isn’t about which software you use - it’s about choosing the right approach to match the project’s complexity, risk profile, and operational realities.
When the Mine Never Sleeps
In a greenfield project, you can pause, plan, and execute in controlled phases. But on an operating mine, your project needs to fit around a living, breathing production ecosystem - one that doesn’t stop for maintenance or new installations. This means project managers must blend flexibility with precision, ensuring innovation projects can unfold safely without disrupting daily output.
Take, for example, a recent sampling and measurement improvement program Treo Group managed at a multi-site gold operation. The objective was to enhance the accuracy, efficiency, and reliability of sampling and measurement systems through infrastructure upgrades, procedural alignment, and data-driven dashboards.
The challenge? Rolling out changes across multiple active plants - each with different constraints, schedules, and production priorities - while ensuring the sampling process continued uninterrupted.
Beyond the Gantt
A traditional Gantt chart couldn’t capture the interdependencies between site operations, shift cycles, and stakeholder readiness. Instead, our project managers adopted a hybrid approach: combining elements of Critical Path Method (CPM) for strategic sequencing with Agile-style sprints to manage field implementation and stakeholder engagement.
The CPM schedule provided the “big picture” - identifying which activities determined project success. The sprint-based execution allowed teams to deliver incremental improvements, collect feedback, and adjust quickly to site realities.
This balance between structure and agility helped ensure that each milestone built measurable value without bottlenecking production.
The Power of Process
Choosing the right scheduling approach also meant building trust and ownership among cross-functional teams. Each site had unique needs, and the project’s success depended on aligning priorities - from plant operators and metallurgists to automation specialists and corporate leadership.
By establishing clear communication rhythms and visual progress dashboards, Treo Group made complex interdependencies visible and manageable. The result was a project that delivered on scope while strengthening operational discipline, data visibility, and team collaboration across the board.
A Strategic Advantage for Decision-Makers
For senior decision-makers, the message is clear: the right scheduling approach isn’t just about delivering on time - it’s about delivering value intelligently. In live mining environments, where production pressures are constant, an adaptive scheduling strategy can mean the difference between disruption and seamless integration.
At Treo Group, we help mining operations translate innovation into real, measurable performance - without compromising production.
