Juan Wheeler has been appointed the new MD at Nissan South Africa (SA), a role which he will fulfil alongside his current position as Nissan Africa CFO.

Nissan Africa president Jordi Vila describes Wheeler as “the perfect candidate” to lead Nissan SA and to build on the Japanese brand’s 60-year history in the country.

Wheeler succeeds Maciej Klenkiewicz, who left the business last year.

Nissan SA earlier this year halted vehicle assembly in South Africa, after selling its Pretoria plant to Chinese manufacturer Chery.

Wheeler began his career as an accountant at South Africa’s former Department of Foreign Affairs, before joining the automotive industry as an accountant with Ford Motor Company.

After many years with Ford in various positions across the world, he returned to South Africa in 2018 to take up the position as CFO of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, and, subsequently, the CFO of Stellantis SA in 2021.

He joined Nissan Africa as CFO in 2025.

Nissan Africa MD Mohamed Abd El Samad says Wheeler’s experience will stand him in good stead for his new assignment.

“Juan is a veteran, not just of the South African automotive industry, but globally, with extensive experience that spans from the back office to manufacturing and sales across multiple continents.

“I look forward to working even more closely with him in this expanded role as Nissan Africa continues to unlock the potential that exists in this continent.”
