Nickel Mining: Enhancing Efficiency through Precise Measurement

Ambatovy Minerals, located on the island of Madagascar, encounters challenges that differ significantly from those faced by mines on the African continent. These challenges include extreme weather events such as cyclones, strong winds, and persistent fluctuations in humidity and temperature. Such environmental conditions can impact the performance of equipment and instrumentation that are essential for nickel mining and refining.

Ambatovy Minerals relies on VEGA to provide reliable solutions that facilitate the effective coordination of mining and refining processes, even in challenging conditions.

Ambatovy is an industrial venture engaged in nickel and cobalt mining and refining operations. It is recognised as the largest foreign investment in Madagascar and is one of the most significant investments in sub-Saharan Africa in the past decade. Ambatovy is among the leading lateritic nickel mining enterprises globally and is noted for its focus on operational efficiency, health and safety standards, environmental management, and community engagement.

The project aims to support economic development in Madagascar. Located near Moramanga in the Alaotra Mangoro Region, approximately 80 km east of Madagascar’s capital, the Mine Site features two major lateritic nickel deposits – the Ambatovy and Analamay Deposits – covering around 1,600 hectares.

Smart Solutions for Mineral Processing

Ambatovy Minerals utilises the PAL (Pressure Acid Leach) process, which is commonly employed in nickel mining to extract nickel and cobalt from complex ore deposits. This process includes several steps, such as the removal of impurities like iron and copper through additional leaching. Subsequently, nickel is precipitated from the solution by adding ammonia, ammonium sulphate, and hydrogen.

The process conditions of PAL pose challenges due to the potential for slurry spillage. Slurry spills can create slippery surfaces, increasing the risk of slips, trips, and falls for workers. Additionally, the slurry contains harsh chemicals that may harm the environment if released into surrounding soil or water bodies. Such spills can disrupt operations, resulting in downtime, reduced productivity, and potential damage to equipment and machinery. Consequently, measures must be implemented to prevent and manage spills effectively.

To mitigate these challenges, Ambatovy Mine has upgraded its level and density measurement instrumentation by incorporating the VEGA MINITRAC 31. This radiometric density measurement sensor is designed for non-contact density measurement of liquids and bulk solids. Installed in the PAL area thickeners, the Minitrac 31 employs radiation and scintillator principles to provide precise and reliable measurements. This enhancement aims to improve operational efficiency and safety at the Ambatovy Mine.

A Flammable Situation

Ensuring the safe storage of highly flammable naphtha fuel at Ambatovy Mine is important, particularly in Madagascar's tropical climate, which is characterised by significant temperature fluctuations, humidity, and a yearly cyclone season. Accurate level measurement is critical in preventing overfilling, which could result in hazardous spills or underfilling, which may lead to gas build-up in storage tanks. The environmental conditions necessitate the selection of instruments with appropriate IP ratings and protections to endure harsh weather elements.

The implementation of VEGAPULS radar sensors at Ambatovy Mine addresses the need for reliable and efficient level measurement. The technology of VEGAPULS radar sensors, including their second-generation radar chip, provides precise and consistent readings in challenging environments. This solution aims to reduce the risk of overfilling and mitigate potential hazards associated with the storage of highly flammable substances like naphtha fuel.

Changing the view

The integration of VEGADIS 81 display modules at Ambatovy Mine improves operational efficiency and safety. These modules are mounted at ground level, allowing technicians to access vital sensor parameters without the need to climb 25 meters to the top of the tanks. This enhanced accessibility streamlines maintenance procedures and reduces the need for work at heights, contributing to improved safety.

The VEGADIS 81 features a user-friendly interface and advanced functionalities that allow operators to monitor process variables accurately. Its high-resolution display and intuitive navigation facilitate the adjustment and configuration of sensor parameters, which aids in optimising sensor performance and operational efficiency.

The VEGADIS 81 and VEGAPULS sensors are constructed to provide robust protection against environmental factors, ensuring durability and reliability in harsh industrial environments. Designed to withstand adverse weather conditions, these instruments serve as dependable solutions for process monitoring and control at Ambatovy Mine. The implementation of VEGAPULS radar sensors and VEGADIS 81 display modules constitutes an advancement in level measurement technology at Ambatovy Mine, contributing to operational safety, regulatory compliance, and efficiency in the storage and monitoring of highly flammable naphtha fuel while addressing the challenges posed by the environmental conditions in Madagascar.
