More than a truck: Enaex Africa’s MMUs connect logistics and blast performance

From a distance, mobile mixing units (MMUs) may look like other heavy vehicles heading to a mine. At the bench, their role is far more specialised. They carry components and equipment needed to deliver bulk blasting product into drilled holes according to the blast plan. Their journey and loading both shape blast performance.

A blast may take seconds, but its success depends on a coordinated chain of manufacturing, transport and site execution. A late delivery can disrupt charging and production. Mines need the right product, unit and team ready at the bench. MMUs make this connection tangible.

They transport components for bulk blasting products, prepare the required formulation and load it into drilled holes. Operators work with blasting teams to deliver the specified quantity and quality, taking account of each hole’s requirements and conditions on site. The MMU is part of blast execution.

Enaex Africa has invested in a range of MMUs to serve operations with different production volumes, terrain and access requirements. Its fleet includes units with capacities of 5 t, 10 t, 15 t, 18 t, 23 t, 25 t and 28 t. Unit choice affects delivery, replenishment and charging within the blast window.

“Our investment in different MMU sizes gives customers capacity suited to their operations. It also helps us plan dependable delivery and loading around the requirements of each mine,” says Enaex Africa sales and mining services executive Fabian Jadue.

Smaller units offer flexibility where site access is restricted or loading volumes are lower. Mid-sized units balance carrying capacity with movement between mines and around a bench. Larger units support high-volume operations by carrying more product per load, provided that the site has the infrastructure and supply arrangements to use them effectively.

At the top of the range is Enaex Africa’s 28-t MMU, the largest in Africa. Capable of pumping up to 28 t of blasting product in one load, it can meet substantial charging requirements at major openpit operations. It is deployed as a site-based unit, supported by appropriate product storage and replenishment. The benefit is not size alone, but the ability to match that capacity to a mine’s operating rhythm.

Public-road compliance is another reason the fleet needs different sizes. Regulations limit vehicle dimensions and mass, including the loads carried by individual axles. An MMU’s stated capacity does not mean it can travel on a public road fully loaded. Its configuration, actual load and route must satisfy the applicable requirements.

A 15-t MMU can provide road-based capacity when operated within its approved limits. An 18-t unit requires particular care in planning its load and road movements. Larger units, including the 28-t MMU, are suited to site-based deployment, with product brought to them through a planned supply system. These decisions protect employees, other road users and communities while reducing avoidable delays.

“Customers need confidence that a planned blast can proceed safely and on schedule. This depends on product being available, the right equipment being in place and our teams being ready to execute,” says Enaex Africa sales and mining services executive Comfort Mathenjwa.

Once an MMU reaches the bench, precision matters as much as punctuality. The blast design sets out what each hole requires; the charging team must deliver it consistently. Loading records and quality checks allow technical teams to compare the plan with execution, assess results and refine future blasts.

Enaex Africa’s MMU fleet forms part of a wider investment in security of supply. Bulk emulsion manufacturing, transport planning, vehicle maintenance, trained operators and on-site teams must work as one system. Mines experience the value of that investment when planned blasts proceed with dependable product access and fewer interruptions.

This is why an MMU should be judged by more than the tonnes it carries. Its value lies in reaching the right site safely, delivering the right product accurately and supporting the mine’s production rhythm. It strengthens productivity and operational certainty overall. Every successful blast has a journey behind it, and the MMU connects that journey to the outcome at the bench.
